Citizen Watches History

"The Watch that is for all Citizens"

The Japanese company The Shokosha Watch Research Institute produced the first Citizen watch. The Mayor of Tokyo, Mr Shinpei Goto, named the watch CITIZEN. The company leaders liked the name, and adopted it in 1930 in an effort to appeal to the wearer as “the watch that is for all citizens.” Citizen is the originator of many ideas in the watch industry, and was one of the first companies to target the general public for wristwatch sales. It is no small accomplishment then, that these days wrist watches are an accessory and fashion statement that many people own in several styles to match various outfits.

Citizen watch has produced approximately 293 million units of complete watch and movement. Considered to be one of the highest Japanese timepieces, their products range from simple battery powered models, to slim line models, to high-tech solar powered models such as the Citizen Eco-Drive model line. They even have a model line that has voice recognition!

A company driven by a unique ingenuity, Citizen was the first Japanese manufacturer to create a water resistant watch, the first to produce a professional diving watch that could electronically sense dive depth (Click to See Available Diving Models), and the first to create a voice recognition watch. Innovation in cutting-edge technology is definitely a strongpoint, and Citizen remains a top-level quality watch manufacturer that makes time-keeping an art form. Their commitment to being ecologically aware is another reason to consider owning Citizen timepieces.
